The authors describe the design and development of an integrated computer-based medical record system and a clinical laboratory system. In contrast to the patient care system, the design and organization of the laboratory system is dictated by work flow and management. Advantages of an integrated system, rather than a simply interfaced one, are in the reduction of storage requirements for the laboratory system and the ability to view any patient data, if authorized, as if only one system existed. A common data dictionary ensures integrity of the data codes and reduces the effort required to maintain the system.
