Magnetic resonance imaging of medical diseases of the spine
In conclusion, MRI has been shown to be the most sensitive test for the evaluation of bone marrow. It is lacking in its ability to screen the entire skeleton, as can be done with BS. MRI, however, is more sensitive for identifying osteoclastic processes of the marrow that may not be detected on BS. MRI is tumor specific for identifying tumor versus infection or degenerative disease and offers the added advantage of being able to assess adjacent soft tissue and neural structures. Newer phased array coils allow evaluation of the entire axial skeleton in a relatively short period of time. Ultimately, confirming vertebral body or disc space disease may require biopsy. These can be easily obtained percutaneously with fluoroscopic or CT guidance.
