Many vital steps in intermediary metabolism require coenzyme A as a cofactor. These include the mitochondrial beta -oxidation pathway for breakdown of fatty acids and most stages of the degradation of branched-chain amino acids (Leu, Ile, Val). Fast atom bombardment (FAB) was applied to the analysis of coenzyme A and several available acyl derivatives. Free coenzyme A and all of the acyl derivatives exhibited useful FAB spectra in both the positive and negative modes of ion extraction and analysis.
