Synthesis of phenanthridin-3-one derivatives: Non-steroidal inhibitors of steroid 5-α-reductase

A short and efficient six-step synthesis of novel phenanthridin-3-one derivatives is described. The synthesis of these derivatives is highlighted by the cyclization of a suitably placed ketone side chain with a thioiminium ion. The derivatives prepared were found to be inhibitors of human steroid 5-α-reductase. © 1995.
