Evolving approaches to management of osteoarthritis
The goals of osteoarthritis (OA) therapy are to retard the destructive process, preserve joint structures, control pain and swelling, maintain mobility, minimize disability and, ultimately, improve the patient's quality of life. Symptoms are relieved by traditional modalities-NSAIDs, analgesics, intra-articular corticosteroids, and arthroscopic procedures-but patients may continue to experience pain and disability. Many patients who have OA try complementary and alternative modalities of intervention, often without their physician's recommendation or even knowledge. These include nutritional supplements, acupuncture, mind-body therapies, yoga, herbal therapy, and manual and manipulation techniques. Several other agents may provide some relief or help to slow the progression of OA.
