Two dimensional array transducers for medical ultrasound applications using multilayer ceramic (MLC) connectors were fabricated using microelectronic techniques was developed with inter-laminar vias combined with a λ/4 acoustic mismatching layer. A random sparse array pattern was used to increase transducer channels needed in a 1 1/2-D and 2-D array in the MLC connector design. The transducer consists of 42×42 = 1764 element composites. The low signal to noise ratio (SNR) of the 1 1/2-D and 2-D arrays can be increased with the application of multilayer ceramic elements to optimize the SNR given a specific transmit and receive configuration.
