The reaction between ((CH3)3Si)2NH and S02 results in the formation of an ionic solid with empirical formula NH4(CH3)3SiOSO2 which readily “sublimes” at ambient temperature. Although (trimethylsilyl)ammonium bisulfite is a logical choice for a molecular formula, IR, NMR, and XPS data rule out the presence of RNH3+ and HSOf ions. These data, along with a consideration of the solution behavior of this unique material, provide strong evidence that the substance is ammonium (trimethylsilyl)sulfite, with the silicon bonded to oxygen rather than sulfur. © 1981, American Chemical Society.
