Fungal infections are increasing due to the growing number of immunocompromised patients. Because in vitro antifungal testing has limitations, animal models remain the essential tool to understand virulence and to optimize antifungal therapies. There are numerous variations and recent changes in animal model design that allow investigators to study different attributes of infection. Here we review the very latest developments in animal model experimentation to study Aspergillus and Candida infections. © 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
