Diabetes mellitus not associated with late pregnancy wastage in prosimian primates
Captive-bred thick-tailed bushbabies (Galago crassicaudatus) have a high rate of late pregnancy wastage with 20% of all detected pregnancies ending in this fashion. Apparently normal stillbirths are alarming and are a useful model for human pregnancy losses. Due to the small size of the bushbabies and the desire to minimize stress, glycosylated hemoglobin (GlyHb) levels were used as an indicator of blood glucose status. GlyHb levels in normal and diabetic dogs, cats and mice were measured to correlate GlyHb with plasma glucose concentrations. There were no differences among Galago groups: adult males, gravid adult females, non-gravid adult female with prior late pregnancy losses and non-gravid adult female without prior pregnancy losses. Diabetes mellitus was not associated with pregnancy wastage.
