China and India have experienced rapid, economic, and gross domestic product (GDP) growth. After the economic disruption of the breakup of the Soviet system, Russia and many countries in Eastern Europe, are now manifesting rapid economic growth. As well, the current economic growth in India and China is related to the massive size of their labor forces. In Russia, Eastern Europe, and Brazil, economic growth is stimulated by either large natural resource reserves and/or large pools of technically trained workers and researchers. We examine sociodemographic and health conditions in Brazil, Russia, India, and China and the potential effects of population and labor force aging on growth. © 2008 Copyright © 2008 Elsevier Inc.
