Service to the Profession
The Microcirculatory Society was founded in 1954 and continues to be the premier academic organization in the world focused on blood flow, mass transport, and vascular biology in health and disease. In addition to multiple committee and executive roles, Dr. Klitzman was the President of The Microcirculatory Society from 1998-9.
Service to Duke
Dr. Klitzman founded the MD/MEng dual degree program. The students take 5 years and receive both MD and Masters in Engineering degrees with a focus in healthcare innovation and entrepreneurship. The program is designed to develop the "clinician inventor", giving the future clinician the knowledge and experience to take creative ideas and concepts and implement them through steps from basic concept, to theoretical design, to research, to prototype construction and testing, to regulatory approval, and finally to commercialization.
The Third Year of medical school at Duke consists of dedicated research or other in-depth scholarly activity. The success of the year depends on close oversight by a team of 14 faculty to ensure that each student has a productive experience. Dr. Klitzman has been the Director of the Biomedical Engineering and Surgery Study Program since 2005.
Dr. Klitzman has taught vascular physiology to first year medical students every year since 1986.
