Research Interests
Dr. Wischmeyer’s clinical and research focus is in critical care, COVID-19 care, nutrition, and perioperative care to help improve outcomes and assist patients in preparing and recovering from critical illness, COVID-19, and surgery.
His research interests include:
1) ICU and surgical nutrition therapy
2) Personalized Exercise Interventions to promote recovery for COVID-19, Long COVID, Critical Care, and Perioperative Care
3) Health Outcome and Large Database research focused on TPN, oral/enteral nutrition, and ICU/surgical outcomes
5) Role of parenteral nutrition in improving outcomes in surgery, trauma, and critical care
6) Perioperative optimization studies
7) Post-illness muscle mass and functional recovery studies
8) Role of probiotics/microbiome in prevention of COVID-19, treating illness and improving cognition.
9) Health Outcome and Large Database research focused on TPN, oral/enteral nutrition, and ICU/surgical outcomes
10) Role of parenteral nutrition in improving outcomes in surgery, trauma, and critical care
Further, we focus on studies of metabolism, indirect calorimetry, novel muscle mass measures via ultrasound and other techniques, and body composition in illnesses including COVID-19, critical care and surgery. Finally, we carry out a range of exercise based and High Intensity Interval training interventions to improve recovery from illness (including COVID-19), from ICU and surgery.
