Advising & Mentoring
I enjoy working with students and fellows at all levels of training from the Department of Medicine as well as those from different disciplinary backgrounds on collaborative projects. My philosophy of teaching is to allow learners to question and to pursue investigations within a structured mentored environment. Students and fellows who work for me receive verbal and written feedback, and I similarly have found feedback from them to be invaluable to my professional growth as a researcher and educator. I have previously mentored trainees from the Departments of Medicine, Microbiology/Immunology, Pharmacy, Pharmacology, Chemistry, and Cell Biology and Physiology. I’ve also had the opportunity to directly mentor postdoctoral research fellows, undergraduates, and master’s candidates, including students who have successfully competed for K and F level federal funding. I have served on thesis committees for MD/PhD and PhD students as well as played an integral role in the Fellowship Training Programs of Allergy Immunology and Rheumatology by supervising these trainees in the clinic, participating in their education at academic conferences and journal clubs, and by serving as the dedicated supervisor of several of them in the research portions of their training.
