Service to the Community ; The Dong lab hosted lab tours for students from Durham Tech Community College and Rogers-Herr Middle School. This has become a regular program. From June 2009 through December 2012, 49 students from Durham Technical Community College have toured our lab as part of their continuing education in the BioPharma program. During the tours, these students were able to see real life application of the skills that they learned during their coursework. In addition, each student had the opportunity to meet with the members of the lab and have their questions answered. Two of the class members were selected to intern in the lab to learn more lab skills and to improve their knowledge base by running experiments under direct supervision in the laboratory environment. Through this experience, five individuals have succeeded in finding lab technician jobs after a short internship in my lab. We currently have three college sophomores, Hannah McMillan, who is attending Davidson in Davidson, NC, Daniel Lockwood, who is attending The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in Chapel Hill, NC, and Caylee Sponsel, who is attending North Carolina State University in Raleigh, NC, working in the lab. All are learning procedures to help their with their course loads as well as learning how the experiments translate to publications by aiding the lab personnel in completing their individual experiments. The PI has been involved in the Summer Research Opportunity Program at Duke University for minority students since 1996 and WISE for women in science.

Service to the Community ; Three Durham Technical Community College students worked directly with research staff for a minimum of 80 hours each (over four weeks) as part of their continuing education requirement of the class they were attending. The lab staff complied with the teaching syllabus to aide the three students in completion of their coursework. In addition to the outlined coursework, each student was able to assist research personnel with experiment work as well as improve technique and basic molecular biology knowledge. Each student was able to personalize their learning experience by directing their focus on areas of interest to themselves.

Service to the Community ; One class from Durham Technical Community College visited the lab on a guided tour as part of their classroom studies. The focus on the tour was to view a laboratory setting, witness application of the education they received, and to ask direct questions to researchers regarding their work and field of study. The class consisted of 12 students and lasted three hours.

Service to the Community ; One rising senior from Riverside High School in Durham received a paid internship and worked directly with research staff to learn molecular biology techniques. The student showed an intense interest in perusing a career in the field and performed experiments independently by the end of the summer. In addition to techniques, the student gained valuable knowledge and understanding of the subject.
