With the molecular tools available for gene manipulation in pathogenic fungi and the rapid development of functional genomics and genome sequencing, the potential to understand the virulence composite of fungal pathogens has never been greater. Virulence gene identification studies are exciting; however, the virulence composite is highly complex and variable. Careful designs and understanding of experimental limitations are needed or many false pathways will be followed as our building blocks develop. The eventual goal of these studies is to develop antifungal drug targets and vaccines - an arduous and complex journey to complete.
