In this first of a two-part article, the authors begin by discussing the general concepts of fungal virulence as well as host factors and fungal-specific factors that may contribute to the development of human disease. This discussion is followed by a description and classification of virulence genes. Part II, including all references, will appear in the August 15, 2000 issue of Clinical Microbiology Newsletter (22:16).
