Though analog electroencephalography (AEEG) has been used by EEG laboratories for many years, many laboratories have switched recently to the newer digital EEG (DEEG) technology. We analyzed the cost-effectiveness and long-term financial implications of DEEG as compared to AEEG. We determined the per study, annual, and 10-year cost of AEEG and DEEG. We also added the initial cost of purchasing an analog and digital system to the 10-year analysis. The annual analysis was based on 1000 studies. Physician reading and dictating time and technical time for running the record were not analyzed. The per study cost with AEEG was $7.20; with DEEG, $1.44. The annual cost of AEEG was $7,500.00; for DEEG. $4,942.80. The 10-year cost for AEEG was $103,000.00; for DEEG, $84,456.00 (including initial purchase price). The savings with DEEG in a 10 year period were $18,544.00. Our DEEG system, in addition to other advantages, offers the potential of financial savings.
