The effect of capsule formation around a subcutaneous implant is discussed. Polyvinyl alcohol sponge and stainless steel wire mesh materials were implanted. The results show that the diffusion coefficients of fluorescein through capsular tissue are approximately 25% lower than those through the subcutaneous tissue. The tissue which encapsulates subcutaneously implanted sensors will retard the diffusion of low molecular weight analytes diffusing from the microvasculature and the extent of diffusion depends on the thickness and vascularity of the capsule.
