Analyses of infiltrates present in rejecting renal transplants have demonstrated a predominance of T-cells. Although these cells have generally had a short life span in vitro, techniques for long-term propagation of them have recently been developed. In an effort to monitor rejection in human renal transplant recipients and to obtain clones of alloreactive cells for future immune manipulation, needle biopsies were performed on all cadaveric donor (CAD) and many living-related donor (LRD) renal transplants and a portion of each biopsy was cultured in 15 cases.
