All primary care pediatric providers will encounter patients who were born prematurely and be faced with the unique challenges this patient population holds. Medical advances in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) steadily increase survival rates of premature infants, however, the care of the premature infant extends beyond the NICU. Throughout their lifetime, children face medical complexities and developmental challenges due to their prematurity. Care of the premature infant is both challenging and rewarding. A provider's basic understanding of common problems of prematurity along with a grasp of local resources translates into better short and long-term outcomes for the patients and families.
